Worthers in trying to persuade Man U’s Darron Gibson to switch allegiances and join the Nordie tiger at Windsor Park.
The 19 year old was born in ‘Derry and played for NI at U-16 level. Having an Irish passport, Gibson then chose to represent RoI.
"I have spoken to him and emphasised how much I want him to be involved with Northern Ireland," said Worthington to the Sunday Life.
"I want him involved with Northern Ireland and it is a situation which has to be resolved."
Gibson has not represent the Republic at senior level despite being in the squad for their recent Euro 208 qualifier with San Marino.
The IFA are still waiting to hear from FIFA on the eligibility of Gibson.
Clearly, the whole passport issue needs sorting out. It seems logic that players must have a British passport on one level, as NI is part of the UK (although significantly better), but we are also one of the few countries that can offer our citizens the opportunity of joint nationality. So, Gibbo, get a British passport as well. They’re cheaper too. |
