David Hanson, Minister of State for the NI Office, has told the Commons that £1.4m has so far been spent on the proposed new stadium at the Maze without so much as a brick being laid.
In the light of the ‘hidden agenda’ obvious to members of the NI community, this blatant misuse of funds will clearly raise further questions about the viability of the scheme that does not have the support of the people of NI.
MP Kate Hoey questioned Hanson on the use of these funds and was told that the figure included consultancy fees, but he was unable to account for where the money has actually been spent. Hoey, who described his answer as ‘strange’ is clearly concerned at the complete lack of transparency the Government has shown concerning this project and now the added issue of misuse of funds.
“Can I point out to him that there is real concern, not just amongst football supporters in NI but among the wider community, about the way this Maze project has been handled – the lack of transparency and accountability,” she said.
However, Hanson has completely rejected these claims insisting that all four political groups as well as football, rugby and GAA are represented and will be using the facilities the new stadium will offer.
Hanson went on to reject that Belfast was a viable option for a new stadium on the grounds of cost despite £1.4mill already having disappeared without accountability.
It is thought that the incoming new executive assembly will have the power to tackle the issue head on. Edwin Poots, minister for the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure, is in talks with the Amalgamation and other groups to assess the nature of concerns.
“It’s a matter for the incoming assembly. I hope they examine this and like we have done, come to the conclusion that the Maze is the best site for the stadium and the development generally,” said a flustered Mr Hanson.
Not on your nelly pal.
