Nigel Worthington has had a dream start managing N Ireland without so much as kicking a boot in the changing rooms. The latest FIFA rankings, published today, show Norn Iron in the top 30 for the first time since the rankings were brought in in 1993.
This is a phenomenal turnaround. When Lawrie Sanchez took the helm in January 2004, Norn Iron were 124 th, 96 places below where they are now. With a team made up mainly of Championship players, this is a fantastic achievement and will hopefully inspire Worthers to continue to great job done by Sanchez.
Whilst all this FIFA crap is pretty meaningless in the scheme of things, it still provides a good measuring stick in terms of achievement. Per capita, we are the highest-ranking team in the world. So, our advice is to get shagging with immediate effect so we can boost the population to around 120 million in the next 20 years and so be the best team in the world.
Norn Iron are now a full 9 places above the Republic and above former world cup winners Uruguay. England have bizarrely managed to stay in 8 th place whilst Scotland undeservedly drop 9 to 23 rd and Wales stay put at 75 th.
