New Year Transfer Time!
Mon, Jan 04 2009
Happy New Year to all our readers. It's January transfer window time, which is always fun.
As we enter a new decade already we have seen Stuart Elliott released by Doncaster Rovers in a deal that will take him to Hamilton Academicals until the end of the season. Angel Wings never really secured a first team place at the Keepmoat and so will be hoping for more regular first team football north of the border.
Following Brian Laws' sacking at Sheffield Wednesday it looks as if Warren Feeney is back on the M6 south and that Dave Jones will recall him to Cardiff City. Craig Cathcart has been out on loan all season at Watford and is due to return to Manchester United this month. Cathcart has made 12 appearances for The Hornets so it will be interesting to see if this loan spell is extended.
Another player out on loan who may or may not return to his club is Man City's Ryan McGivern who is currently on loan at Leicester City. Gone the other way is Leicester's Billy Kee who is due back from Accrington Stanley. Kee has made 17 appearances for the League Two side and scored twice. He was recently drafted into the Northern Ireland senior squad to replace an injured Kyle Lafferty.
One player all Northern Ireland supporters will be keeping their eyes on is Sunderland's David Healy, who only managed a paltry 13 minutes in the Black Cats' 3-0 win over Barrow-in-Furness on Saturday. Healy has made known his frustrations but has now made public that he is open to offers. It seems likely that he will be released on loan and, if he is looking for first team football, then the Championship seems the obvious destination.
It will be interesting to see whether Roy Keane would be interested in taking him to Ipswich. Afterall, it was Keane who brought him to the Stadium of Light in the first instance, but with strikers well ahead of him in the pecking order it is time to leave.
Healy has had a frustrating club career and age is not on his side. A player with such an outstanding international record needs to be playing regular football; otherwise he could lose his place playing for his country.
Meanwhile Sean McAuley remains at Sheffield Wednesday as caretaker manager for the time being. It has been all quiet on the Worthington front, but we will let you know as soon as any news breaks.
