Transfer Deadline Looms

There's only five days left of the January transfer window and still no news of a move for David Healy.

As Steve Bruce suffered yet another defeat and the hands of Everton last night one wonders whether it's his defence, strikers or both he needs to invest in before the end of the month. Despite Healy having a seat on the bench he was not on the subs list last night. With Sunderland hoping to offload both Healy and Danny Murphy it may be time for a rethink given unsettling performances from Kenwyne Jones and the shock shooting of Salvador Cabanas whom Bruce had hoped would join them this week.

On a more positive note Steve Davis got Rangers off to a flying start away to St Mirran with a sublime one-two with fellow Northern Ireland teammate Kyle Lafferty. A looping ball over the home defence saw Davis beat the offside trap to help stretch Rangers lead at the top of the SPL, allied by Celtics home defeat to Hibs. Both Davis and Lafferty have been pivotal in what has been a dominating season for the Gers and with Andrew Little no stranger to goal celebrations it all looks promising ahead of what will be a critical year for Northern Ireland football.

Scunthorpe moved six points away from the relegation zone with a two-nil win over Sheffield Wednesday at Glanford Park last night. Grant McCann came close to scoring early on only to see his effort cleared off the line, but managed to seal the three points for Scunny with a goal thirteen minutes from time. McCann has been frustrated at the lack of movement in terms of renegotiating his contract and it has been no secret that Aidy Boothroyd at Colchester is a big admirer amongst others.

The January transfer window is always full of rumour, speculation and dirty tricks. Much of it is mind games but none of us have any doubt of the frustrations Healy must be feeling at this current time. With the international season beginning in Albania in little over a month's time, Healy knows he will struggle for a place if he stays where he is. One likely scenario, and this is again only speculation, is that Sunderland will cut their losses, keep him and then lend him out after the transfer window has expired. In that way they'll at least get his wages paid and not lose face.
